Which Degree Program is Right for You?

If you have been considering going back to school, you may wonder which is the best way to continue your education. Should you attend community college in the evenings? Perhaps you should get a job at night and attend a traditional college during the day. You also may have been thinking about whether or not an online degree program would be right for you. There are pros and cons to attending college online, and there are also pros and cons to going to a traditional college. The first step to choosing the school that you want to attend is figuring out which type of college to attend.

Online College Works Well if you are Employed

If you have a job, or are looking for a job, going to college online will probably work best with your schedule. At a traditional college, you have to attend class at whatever time they offer it. Most classes are offered during normal business hours. Although many colleges offer classes in the evenings, they may not offer all of the required classes you need to graduate when you are off of work. You could choose to work at nights while you attend college, but in many career fields, that is not an option. Online education works well with people who want to keep their day job, but still want to get a degree.

Traditional College Offers a Different Experience

If you don't have a job that you want to keep and a family to support, traditional college offers an experience that many online colleges can't compete with. The classroom setting gives you the opportunity to meet with your professors and classmates on a regular basis, attend study groups, and perhaps even attend the occasional college football game. If you have trouble motivating yourself, or might forget to complete your school assignments without having classmates and a professor that you are accountable to in person, a traditional college might be your best bet. On the other hand, if you are self-motivated but are shy around people in person, the online college experience might be better for you.

Online College is More Convenient

Online college can be more convenient for many people, especially if they lead busy lives. You can fit in your education on your lunch break, on business trips, or even at the end of the day. You can attend college in your pajamas, at the pool, or wherever you happen to be that has an internet connection. If you have a busy schedule but are still committed to completing your education, you may find the convenience of college online helpful. In many cases, the flexibility that distance learning offers may be the one thing that stands in the way of getting your degree or not continuing your education.
